I am passionate about writing and wildlife, and have found wildlife journalism to be the perfect combination of the two. I frequently travel to see species in their natural habitats, some particular highlights for me have been wrestling an orphaned lion cub in South Africa, seeing sloths lumped like balled up socks up trees in the Amazon and having my path crossed by a baby black bear whilst camping in Canada.

It is probably no coincidence, then, that many of my poems feature animals or wild places. I enjoy the way that language can reawaken memories of these trips, and love finding new ways to capture the movement and character of the creatures who have slithered, loped or galloped into my life. Besides wildlife, my poems reflect my interest in art, and my most recent work is a series of poems based on the paintings of Edward Hopper, as I am intrigued by the unspoken narrative underlying his images.
My short stories tend to be about people and relationships, as it gives me great pleasure to imagine the workings of a character’s mind. I am a great lover of this form, and appreciate that in the best stories no details are wasted. Particular writers who have inspired me included Raymond Carver, Flannery O’Connor, James Joyce and, of course, Anton Chekhov.
