Office at Night

2009

Fran is a lousy secretary.
Perhaps that’s why his wife hates her,
that, and the tight skirts.
Once he heard her talk about Fran
on the phone –
“I swear the girl must sew herself in.
She’s like a snake ready to shed.”
He likes to talk about her
at the dinner table. Waits
until the mashed potatoes
are being spooned, enjoys
how her name can cause
such spillages.
In this way, he is able
to work closely
with young Freddy Smith.
Pop round late in the evening
with paperwork,
whilst his wife picks up the phone.

(based on the work of Edward Hopper)
